What you’ll do:

The Embedded Software Specialist will serve as the technical lead and system-level subject matter expert for Eaton’s energy metering and power quality products. This role provides technical leadership for product architecture, design, development, and integration, ensuring robust, scalable solutions that enable high precision energy measurement, advanced power quality analytics, reliable event recording, and secure digital connectivity. The Specialist must maintain a comprehensive understanding of product functionality and the interactions among sensing hardware, embedded firmware, measurement algorithms, communications, and standards from both IEEE, IEC and UL. The role is responsible for translating product and marketing requirements into product / functional requirements, guides technical decisions, resolves complex software / system issues, and supports teams in evaluating design trade-offs and system behavior. This position collaborates closely with product management, firmware, hardware, verification and validation, and manufacturing teams throughout the product lifecycle. The Embedded Software Specialist requires deep expertise in embedded software, real-time data acquisition and processing, energy measurement, power quality analysis, and industrial communications.

Essential Functions:

  • Product Architecture: Define robust, modular software and system architectures for Eaton’s energy metering and power quality products, enabling scalable, reliable solutions across product families and serving as the primary technical authority for software and system-level decisions. Provide technical leadership for embedded software development in C/C++ across bare-metal, embedded Linux, and RTOS platforms, including FreeRTOS and Zephyr, ensuring deterministic high-rate sampling, effective multitasking, and reliable bootloaders, BSP/HAL layers, drivers, and inter-processor communications.

  • Requirements and Compliance: Collaborate with product management and marketing to translate customer needs into clear, traceable product specifications from system requirements, software requirements, and acceptance criteria targeting the metering industry. Drive compliance with applicable metering and power quality standards, including ANSI accuracy standards, ANSI C12.46, IEC 61000-4-30, and NEMA/ANSI submetering requirements, with IEEE C37.118 applied where synchro phasor functionality is required; work with validation teams to demonstrate compliance under harmonic distortion and environmental variations. Establish and champion software quality, cybersecurity, and verification practices, including code reviews, Black Duck/Coverity scanning, secure boot, code signing, CI/CD and compatibility testing across hardware and software variants.

  • Product Development and Integration: Lead the development and integration of high-precision measurement algorithms, including RMS, power, energy, demand, vector calculations, and phase compensation, to achieve required accuracy across operating ranges and real-world electrical conditions. Guide advanced power quality measurement and analytics, including waveform capture, harmonic analysis, flicker, anomaly detection, circuit health monitoring, and event sequencing, using precise timestamping and NTP/PTP synchronization to deliver reliable diagnostic information. Partner with hardware engineers to ensure accurate sensing and acquisition, address current and voltage sensing, Rogowski coils, DC sensing, ADC interfacing, sampling theory, noise, and analog front-end behavior to achieve system-level measurement performance.

  • Product Connectivity: Guide secure communications and platform integration, including TCP/UDP, Modbus, BACnet, CAN, EtherNet/IP, SNMP, MQTT, AMQP, and GOOSE as applicable, and integrate metering applications with our proprietary platform team, APIs, logging, and event-management capabilities. Establish software architecture and interface practices for metering visualization, including embedded web servers, React-based interfaces, waveform and trend displays, and JSON/XML APIs, ensuring accurate presentation of energy and power quality data and secure access to product functionality.

  • Product Support: Lead investigations, research, and prototyping to resolve complex system issues, evaluate emerging technologies, and guide roadmap decisions; collaborate with quality, manufacturing, and customer-facing teams to implement verified corrective actions for field and production issues.

Qualifications:

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience developing embedded software or firmware for industrial products.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in technical leadership (including: lead engineer, software specialist, or architect roles) involving embedded software and hardware/software integration.
  • Experience developing embedded software in C/C++ and working with real-time operating systems or embedded Linux.
  • Experience designing, integrating, and debugging embedded systems involving data acquisition, measurement processing, or industrial communications.
  • Eaton will not consider applicants for employment immigration sponsorship or support for this position. This means that Eaton will not support any CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT plans, F-1 to H-1B, H-1B cap registration, O-1, E-3, TN status, I-485 job portability, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing energy meters, power quality analyzers, branch-circuit monitoring systems, or related power distribution products for data center, industrial, and commercial applications.
  • Experience implementing high-precision measurement algorithms and advanced power quality functions, including waveform capture, harmonic analysis, anomaly detection, circuit health monitoring, and high-rate sample streaming.
  • Experience integrating current and voltage sensing technologies, including Rogowski coils and DC sensing, with knowledge of ADC interfacing, sampling theory, phase compensation, noise mitigation, and analog front-end behavior.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, FreeRTOS, or Zephyr; MCU/MPU architectures; BSP/HAL and driver development; interprocess communications; and Yocto-based build environments.
  • Experience with industrial and connected-device protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, CAN, EtherNet/IP, GOOSE, SNMP, MQTT, and AMQP, together with TCP/UDP networking and NTP/PTP time synchronization.
  • Experience integrating embedded applications with Eaton’s proprietary platform or comparable connected-product platforms, including APIs, logging, event engines, and data services.
  • Familiarity with embedded web servers and metering visualization using React, component-based architectures, High charts or similar libraries, and JSON/XML interfaces.
