The Apple Security Identity team builds and provides identities to infrastructure and services that fuel Apple’s services (such as iCloud, iTunes, Siri, and Maps). We are looking to hire a Software Engineering Manager with a proven track record of strong technical while leading a team software engineers. You will be responsible for providing day-to-day directions and managing activities of these engineers to deliver against the Apple Security Identity goals.

Apple Services Engineering Security org is looking for a Engineering Manager to lead a team of software engineers in the Identity space. You will play a pivotal role in designing and leading a multi-year Identity strategy that will be the future for Identities for services at Apple.

You and your team will design, build, and operate micro-services and capabilities that handle millions of API requests daily to vend identities for infrastructure and applications. You'll work with your teams to establish a long running execution plan for the org, taking ownership of important department-level and company-level OKRs, and regularly communicate status, roadmap and risks to critical partners, including top level leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback, goal setting, and career growth conversations
  • Participate in hiring, interviewing, and onboarding of new team members
  • Contribute to performance reviews and calibration, with guidance from your manager
  • Plan and track team work: break down roadmap goals, prioritize, estimate, and remove blockers to keep delivery on track
  • Partner with senior engineers on design and code reviews, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, and secure
  • Support operational excellence for production services, including on-call health, incident response, and post-incident reviews
  • Work with customer teams to drive adoption of minimum security requirements, and track and report progress
  • Communicate status, risks, and trade-offs clearly to your manager, stakeholders, and partner teams
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative team culture with strong engineering practices
  • Stay technical enough to understand team designs and trade-offs, with limited hands-on coding as the team requires

Minimum Qualifications

    • 1+ years of experience leading people or teams, mentor, or project lead, with a strong interest in management as a career
    • 7+ years of software development or production operations experience in a large-scale environment
    • Experience writing production code in Golang or Swift
  • Experience building and operating highly available, distributed, and fault-tolerant systems
  • Solid understanding of operating systems concepts including multi-threading, memory management, networking and storage, performance and scale
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and containerization
  • Working knowledge of securing APIs, including input validation, authentication, and authorization mechanisms for RESTful and gRPC APIs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience managing engineers, including hiring and performance feedback
  • Knowledge of policy-based authorization mechanisms and engines, including Open Policy Agent/Rego or Zanzibar
  • Knowledge of authentication mechanisms, including OAuth, JWT, and other identity management protocols
  • Familiarity with incident response processes and the ability to respond to security incidents effectively
  • Knowledge of cryptographic algorithms and protocols for securing data, including TLS/SSL, digital signatures, hashing, and encryption
  • Hands-on experience with systems-level work, including configuring and troubleshooting system initialization processes

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $195,700 and $338,400, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
