About the job
OCI Managed Services focuses on the capabilities customers need to run, migrate, and scale sophisticated applications on OCI without substantial redesign. The portfolio spans managed application and data services—including Managed Kafka, OCI Streaming, OCI Queue, OpenSearch, Workflow as a Service, and Managed Temporal—alongside Resource Intelligence capabilities that help customers discover, understand, optimize, govern, and automate their OCI resources. The team also shapes the shared platform primitives that enable managed services to operate reliably at scale, including emerging capabilities for data movement and distributed systems. This is a workload- and capability-driven organization. Success is measured not only by the adoption of an individual service, but by the larger database, AI, application, and migration workloads that service enables across OCI.
Role Details OCI is seeking a senior Architect to help define the next generation of Managed Services for distributed applications and workloads. The central challenge is ambitious: enable customers to move sophisticated applications to OCI without substantial redesign because critical platform capabilities are missing. This is a broad technical leadership role, not ownership of a single service. You will shape architecture across messaging, streaming, Kafka, workflow, search, resource intelligence, and the underlying distributed-system primitives that make these services reliable and reusable. You will work from customer and workload requirements downward—determining what OCI should build, extend, adopt, reuse, or simplify.
Exciting Opportunity This role offers unusual technical scope and agency. Many of the most important architectural decisions are still open: which capabilities should become shared platform primitives, how managed services should work together, where OCI can create differentiated value, and how existing systems must evolve to support more demanding workloads at greater scale. You will help create the technical foundation that enables database, AI, application, and migration workloads across OCI. The work spans deep distributed-systems challenges in availability, durability, consistency, latency, multi-tenancy, and operability, alongside the opportunity to establish patterns and mechanisms that improve how multiple teams build and operate services.
Responsibilities
What You Will Do
-
Define technical direction and architecture across OCI Managed Services and shared distributed-system capabilities.
-
Translate ambiguous customer and workload requirements into clear technical strategy, architecture, and execution priorities.
-
Drive pragmatic build, adopt, extend, reuse, and simplify decisions across a broad service portfolio.
-
Lead the evolution of production systems, addressing architectural limits, technical debt, operational risk, and scale without disrupting customers.
-
Partner with engineering leaders across messaging, streaming, workflow, search, resource intelligence, and adjacent platform teams.
-
Establish reusable architecture, interfaces, patterns, and technical mechanisms adopted across multiple teams.
-
Drive decisions involving partitioning, replication, consistency, durability, failure handling, backpressure, latency, capacity, and customer isolation.
-
Improve operational resilience through thoughtful design for observability, deployment, upgrades, incident response, cost, and operational toil.
-
Mentor engineers and architects, strengthening technical depth and multiplying the effectiveness of the broader organization.
-
Influence across organizational boundaries through technical judgment, clear communication, and a strong point of view.
Basic Qualifications
-
Extensive experience designing or materially evolving distributed systems at meaningful scale.
-
Demonstrated ability to explain the architecture, tradeoffs, and outcomes of systems you personally designed or changed.
-
Experience evolving live, customer-facing systems while maintaining reliability and minimizing disruption.
-
Strong technical breadth across service APIs, distributed architecture, storage, compute, networking, and operational characteristics.
-
Experience solving high-scale, highly available, low-latency, or high-throughput problems.
-
Proven ability to move from an ambiguous customer or business problem to a practical technical solution.
-
Demonstrated influence across multiple engineering teams without relying on formal authority.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience in cloud infrastructure, messaging, streaming, workflow, search, databases, control planes, advertising systems, financial infrastructure, payments, or comparable distributed environments.
-
Experience making build-versus-buy, open-source adoption, platform reuse, or service-integration decisions.
-
Experience creating architecture, technical mechanisms, or engineering practices adopted across multiple teams.
-
Experience with managed services, multi-tenant platforms, or developer-facing cloud products.
-
Background in hyperscale cloud infrastructure or another environment with demanding availability, correctness, and performance requirements.
