This Role:
BioLite and Goal Zero have joined forces, and we are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join our Midvale-based team. In this role, you will develop the firmware that connects our power products to the cloud (AWS IoT) and to our Flutter and React Native mobile apps. You will work on the wireless connectivity modules in our home backup and portable power products. These modules work alongside battery management, inverter, and power conversion subsystems. You will focus on provisioning, OTA updates, device-to-cloud messaging, fleet telemetry, and the protocols among modules in the rest of the system. Our current products use the ESP32, and you will help choose and bring up the wireless platform for our next generation of products. Options we are looking at include embedded Rust (Embassy), embedded Linux, and smart home standards such as Matter and Thread.
A large part of this job is making existing firmware better. You will refactor, add tests, and pay down technical debt so the team ships faster with fewer field issues. You will work with firmware, electrical, cloud, and mobile engineers. You will debug at the bench with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and your code will run on devices in homes and in the field.
You Will:
-
Develop connectivity-module firmware: Develop and maintain firmware for our Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE connectivity modules, including provisioning, configuration, OTA updates, and device-to-cloud messaging.
-
Improve the codebase you inherit: Refactor existing firmware, add unit and hardware-in-the-loop tests, and set coding standards that make changes safe and code reviews fast.
-
Build communication protocols: Develop the protocol libraries that connect our subsystems (battery management, inverter, IoT module) to each other and to the mobile app.
-
Lead the firmware build and release pipeline: Maintain CI/CD in GitHub Actions for firmware builds, tests, and releases for your projects. Make OTA releases reliable and traceable.
-
Work across the device-to-cloud path: Work with cloud and mobile engineers on device APIs (AWS IoT), fleet telemetry, and app integration. Debug issues end-to-end, from the radio to the app.
-
Use modern tools: Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to speed up prototyping, debugging, testing, and documentation.
-
Review and document: Take part in code and design reviews. Document designs for other developers, QA, manufacturing partners, and support.
You Have:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; OR 5+ years of directly relevant experience.
-
3+ years writing production firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers or SoCs (e.g., Espressif ESP32, Nordic nRF, ST STM32, or other Arm Cortex-M).
-
Experience with a real-time operating system (e.g., FreeRTOS, Zephyr) and a wireless vendor SDK (e.g., ESP-IDF, nRF Connect SDK).
-
Working knowledge of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, and an IoT messaging protocol such as MQTT.
-
Working knowledge of bootloaders, OTA updates, and device provisioning.
-
Working knowledge of serial communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN).
-
Experience testing embedded code (unit tests, simulation, or hardware-in-the-loop).
-
Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript for build, test, and tooling scripts.
-
Experience with Git/GitHub, code review, and CI/CD.
-
Experience with AI coding assistants in your daily work.
Nice to Have:
You do not need the following skills to apply, but please let us know if you have experience in any of these areas.
-
Experience with AWS IoT Core or another cloud IoT platform, including REST APIs.
-
Experience with mobile app development (native, Flutter, or React Native).
-
Experience with smart home protocols such as Matter, Thread, Zigbee, or Z-Wave.
-
Experience with or interest in embedded Rust (e.g., Embassy) or embedded Linux (e.g., Yocto, Buildroot).
-
Experience with fleet monitoring, device telemetry, or crash reporting.
-
Experience with consumer electronics, batteries, or power conversion.
To Apply:
-
Please include a cover letter explaining why you're a good fit for this position. Feel free to link or describe a relevant personal project, hobby build, or open-source contribution that highlights your firmware or software skills.
-
You must be authorized to work for an employer in the U.S. BioLite cannot sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for this position.
