About the job
Job Description
We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead Network Engineering within NIO (Network and Infrastructure Operations). You’ll own the network that connects 400+ stores, fulfillment centers, and distribution centers. That includes our Versa SD-WAN fabric, connectivity into AWS, Azure, GCP, and OCI, and Juniper wired and Mist wireless. Uptime, resilience, and security for all of it are on you, along with the team that runs it.
The way we run the network is changing. Engineers used to log in to devices and make changes by hand. Now changes go through Git and automated pipelines, AI helps write change documents and work through alerts, and the team’s work is tracked in GitHub. You’ll lead that shift. Some engineers will take to it right away and some will need coaching, and you’ll be doing both.
This is a hands-on job. You’ll work daily with Network Security, CIS, and Edge, and with Store Technology, Fulfillment Operations, and Cloud Architecture. We want someone who spent years building and running large enterprise and cloud networks before moving into management, and who can explain a routing problem to an engineer or a VP in terms each of them cares about.
What We’re Working On
-
Network changes go through Git. An engineer pulls the current config, makes the change, and opens a pull request for review. The change is tied to a ServiceNow record, goes through CAB, and runs pre and post checks when the engineer starts it. Scheduled jobs also snapshot device configs every night and store them in Git, so we can see what changed and when.
-
We use AI for two things so far. One is writing Methods of Procedure, which gives CAB structured risk data to review instead of free-form documents. The other is alert analysis, which we’re building now. When a monitoring alert fires, an agent gathers context and lists the most likely causes with the evidence for each. An engineer reads it and decides what to do.
-
The team’s work lives in GitHub. Issues cover day-to-day tasks, Projects hold the roadmap, and Jira holds the larger initiatives. Anyone can see what we’re working on, why, and what code or change it connects to.
A Day in the Life
-
Run stand-ups and sprint planning, keep work moving in GitHub Issues and Projects, and sort out priorities across SD-WAN, cloud, wired and wireless, and data center fabric
-
Review designs for new network work, such as SD-WAN policy changes, AWS Cloud WAN updates, Juniper campus and wireless rollouts, and VXLAN fabric expansions
-
Work with store technology, fulfillment operations, and cloud teams on network designs that fit how stores, warehouses, and offices actually operate
-
Watch network health across Versa, Juniper, and the data center fabrics, and lead the response when something degrades. Alert analysis from our AI tooling gives you a head start on causes.
-
Hold 1:1s with each engineer. Coach on career growth and hard technical problems, and help people who are newer to code, pull requests, and automation get comfortable with them.
-
Work with Cloud Architecture, Security, and Infrastructure on the roadmap, including SD-WAN expansion, cloud connectivity, and wireless modernization
-
Sit on the Change Advisory Board and approve production changes. The MOPs and automated pre and post checks we use make those reviews faster.
-
Dig into performance and cost data to tune routing, bandwidth, and cloud egress spend without missing SLAs
-
Review automation work and IaC repos, and make sure changes get peer review, testing, and a rollback plan
-
Keep the backlog, roadmap, and larger initiatives current in GitHub and Jira
-
Set the rules for how the team uses AI. Engineers own every change they make, AI output gets read before anyone acts on it, and we keep records for audit.
-
Lead post-incident reviews, then turn what you learn into better runbooks, alert tuning, and automation
Requirements
-
10+ years of hands-on network engineering across on-premises enterprise infrastructure and cloud networking (AWS, Azure, or GCP) before moving into management, with at least 3 years leading people or a technical team
-
Hands-on experience deploying or operating SD-WAN, ideally Versa Networks or a comparable platform
-
Solid understanding of cloud networking across AWS, Azure, GCP, and/or OCI, including Cloud WAN, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VNet peering, and hybrid connectivity. NIO operates in all four clouds.
-
Experience with enterprise wired and wireless networking, including Juniper EX/QFX switching, Mist AI wireless, or comparable campus and branch platforms
-
Hands-on experience with data center fabrics, including VXLAN/EVPN design, BGP, and multi-tenant overlays
-
Deep knowledge of routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), WAN technologies, QoS, and network segmentation for multi-site enterprises
-
Experience leading teams through incident response, root cause analysis, and problem management in complex, distributed networks
-
Hands-on experience with network automation and infrastructure-as-code using Ansible, Terraform, Python, or similar, plus GitOps and CI/CD for network config. You’ve moved a team from manual changes to automated, peer-reviewed ones.
-
Real experience using AI in engineering or operations work, such as writing documentation, analyzing incidents, or generating code, and good judgment about when its output needs checking
-
Experience running a team’s work through GitHub Issues and Projects, Jira, or something similar, with clear priorities and a roadmap people can see
-
Working knowledge of observability tools like New Relic, Datadog, or Splunk. Familiarity with AI-driven network assurance such as Juniper Marvis is a plus.
-
Experience building and developing strong engineering teams, with a focus on career growth and technical craft
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
-
Able to explain network issues in terms of business impact, to engineers and executives alike
-
Experience managing vendors for network hardware, software licensing, and managed services
Preferred Skills
-
Hands-on experience with Versa VOS, SD-WAN policy orchestration, and zero-touch provisioning for large branch deployments
-
Experience designing or running AWS Cloud WAN with global segments, core network policies, and multi-region connectivity
-
Familiarity with Juniper Mist AI, including Mist WAN Assurance, Marvis, and AI-driven wireless operations
-
Experience building or running AI agents or LLM-based tools for network or infrastructure operations, including runbook-driven workflows where a human makes the final call
-
Experience with workflow and automation platforms such as Temporal or StackStorm, especially automation that collects network state, tracks changes in Git, and triggers controlled actions
-
Experience tying version control, MOP documentation, and ITSM tools such as ServiceNow into one change management workflow
-
Experience with VXLAN/EVPN in multi-vendor or Juniper QFX data center fabrics, including underlay and overlay design and BUM traffic handling
-
Knowledge of retail or fulfillment environments and what high-transaction, always-on stores and distribution centers need from the network
-
Experience with segmentation, micro-segmentation, ZTNA, and integration with cloud security services
-
Experience with load testing, capacity planning, and performance benchmarking for WAN and data center networks
-
Familiarity with PCI-DSS and SOC2 as they apply to retail network segmentation and data protection
-
Industry certifications such as CCNP/CCIE, Juniper JNCIP/JNCIE, AWS Advanced Networking Specialty, or equivalent
-
Experience in Agile/Scrum environments, including sprint planning, backlog management, and team-level OKRs
-
A track record of network modernization or automation work that cut operational toil, improved reliability, or lowered cost
