We are seeking a Lab Engineer to run day-to-day lab operations and support production and hardware testing. You'll build and maintain test fixtures, manage lab resources and equipment, and make sure measurements are accurate and traceable. You'll work hands-on with hardware, electrical harnesses, and precision measurement tools, and you'll work closely with design, test, and production teams.
As a Lab Engineer, you will support development, readiness, and operation of solar production area and test systems infrastructure. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to translate test needs into safe, reliable, and repeatable test setups. You will improve current test setups, integrate instrumentation and equipment, perform equipment checkout and commissioning activities, execute complex testing, troubleshoot hardware and test system issues. This is a highly hands-on engineering role that combines mechanical engineering, test system development, production operations, troubleshooting, and testing.
Key job responsibilities • Set up, operate, and maintain lab equipment for production station and test hardware. • Partner with Control Engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to understand test requirements and determine equipment, instrumentation and fixture needs. • Monitor complex tests, evaluate system behavior, identify abnormal conditions, and safely respond to test anomalies. • Design, build, and modify custom test fixtures and tooling. • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot 3D printers. • Perform basic machining operations (drilling, cutting, and similar) to fabricate and modify fixtures and hardware. • Take measurements and inspect hardware with calipers, micrometers, profilometers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and DAQ systems. • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, electrical drawings, and GD&T to build, assemble, and verify hardware. • Develop, build, troubleshoot, repair, and rework electrical harnesses, working from schematics and electrical drawings. • Develop, build, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and improve mechanical and electromechanical systems including custom fixtures, motors, and control systems, working from schematics, engineering drawings, and first-principles reasoning. • Manage lab resources, equipment, and supplies, including inventory, ordering, and scheduling. • Develop and execute preventative maintenance plans for mechanical equipment. • Organize and maintain the lab or shop space, and track equipment calibration to keep it current and compliant. • Document test setups, procedures, and results. • Enforce lab safety and housekeeping standards. • Provide technical guidance to technicians and other personnel on equipment operation, test setup, troubleshooting, and safe test execution.
Basic Qualifications
- Experience in project management including resource planning, managing schedules, reporting project status and prioritizing tasks
- 1 year + of experience in hardware development, industrial equipment maintenance, space/aerospace maintenance, or another hands-on engineering environment.
- Knowledge of and experience with measurement and inspection devices (torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, DAQ systems).
- Experience developing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical harnesses.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with calibration management systems.
- Experience with CAD tools for fixture design.
- Experience applying DFM principles and tolerance analysis to design manufacturable parts and functional assemblies.
- Experience creating engineering drawings for machining.
- Experience with harness design tools or documentation (wiring diagrams, pin-out and connector specifications, harness build drawings).
