About the job

Overview

MasTec (NYSE: MTZ) is one of North America's leading infrastructure construction companies, operating across communications, clean energy, power delivery, pipeline infrastructure, industrial, and heavy civil markets. Our teams support large-scale, high-impact infrastructure initiatives where operational excellence and financial rigor come together to deliver mission-critical results for utility, energy, and communications partners.

Are you passionate about transforming finance into a stronger partner to operations? MasTec is seeking a Director of Operations Finance to lead the Operations Finance organization supporting Intren, Shade Tree, and UTR, a portfolio with more than $1 billion in annual revenue across the Central and Midwest regions. This position is based in Aurora, Illinois, and requires approximately 10% travel.

This role is the senior financial partner to operations leadership and is accountable for forecast integrity, earnings and cash visibility, project review effectiveness, team capability, and consistent operating finance practices. The Director will lead a team of approximately 4-6 managers. Those managers lead the finance professionals who work directly with projects and operations. The Director is responsible for setting direction, developing leaders, establishing standards, and ensuring consistent execution across the portfolio rather than personally performing day-to-day project finance activities.

Reporting to the region’s SVP Finance, the Director will drive a significant transformation across people, processes, technology, and data. The successful candidate will build organizational capability, modernize operating practices and systems, improve accountability, and create a scalable Operations Finance model that supports profitable growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Operations Finance strategy and operating model for Intren, Shade Tree, and UTR across the Central and Midwest regions.
  • Serve as the primary financial advisor to senior operations leadership on growth, execution, risk, capital, cash, profitability, and organizational priorities.
  • Lead, coach, and develop approximately 4-6 finance managers, establishing clear roles, performance expectations, development plans, and succession coverage.
  • Build the capability of the management team to effectively lead the project-facing finance professionals who partner with Operations, Project Management, Accounting, and Project Controls.
  • Drive transformation across people, processes, technology, and data, including organization design, talent development, process standardization, reporting modernization, automation, and data governance.
  • Define the future-state Operations Finance model, assess current-state gaps, establish a prioritized roadmap, and hold leaders accountable for adoption and measurable outcomes.
  • Own consolidated forecasts, annual plans, long-range outlooks, management reporting, and executive performance narratives across the portfolio.
  • Ensure the management team maintains credible project and portfolio forecasts that connect scope, schedule, resources, spend, revenue, earnings, cash, and working capital.
  • Establish governance and standards for project reviews, estimate-at-completion changes, risks and opportunities, revenue recognition, backlog, corrective actions, and escalation.
  • Identify portfolio-level trends and intervene early when performance, forecast accuracy, earnings, cash, or working capital expectations are at risk.
  • Provide financial leadership for strategic initiatives, acquisitions or integrations, new markets, major bids, investments, and organizational changes.
  • Sponsor finance systems, reporting, analytics, automation, and data-governance improvements that increase speed, consistency, visibility, and decision quality.
  • Redesign and simplify cross-functional processes to reduce manual effort, improve controls, clarify accountability, and support continued growth.
  • Partner with Accounting, Commercial, Project Controls, Procurement, Fleet, HR, IT, and executive leadership to align enterprise processes and decisions.
  • Create a culture of accountability, operational curiosity, continuous improvement, and service to the field.
  • Travel approximately 10% to operating locations, project sites, and regional offices across the Central and Midwest regions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strategic and transformational finance leader with deep understanding of project-based operations and construction or EPC economics.
  • Proven ability to advise executives and influence significant operational, financial, and organizational decisions.
  • Demonstrated success leading organizations through change involving people, processes, technology, data, and operating practices.
  • Experience leading and developing a team of managers, building leadership capability, managing performance, and strengthening succession pipelines.
  • Strong command of forecasting, revenue recognition, project performance, cash flow, working capital, controls, and portfolio performance.
  • Ability to lead through other leaders by setting clear direction, establishing standards, inspecting outcomes, and maintaining accountability.
  • Ability to identify enterprise-level risk and convert analysis into clear action and ownership.
  • Strong communication and executive presence, with the ability to simplify complex issues for operational and financial audiences.
  • Track record of process, technology, reporting, analytics, or organizational transformation with measurable business impact.
  • High standards for data integrity, governance, forecast credibility, and execution discipline.
  • Ability to operate effectively across multiple businesses, regions, and stakeholder groups in a fast-paced environment.

EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Typically 12 or more years of progressive finance leadership experience, including responsibility for complex project-based operations, teams, and organizational transformation.
  • Construction, engineering, utilities, or EPC experience required.
  • Experience supporting a large, multi-entity or multi-region operating portfolio strongly preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, MBA, or relevant advanced degree or certification preferred.

KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Collaborate (Plan & Align, Influence) - Build partnerships and work collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.
  • Develop Talent - Develop people to meet both their career goals and the organization’s goals.
  • Drive Vision & Purpose - Paint a compelling picture of the vision and strategy that motivates others to action.
