At Horrocks, we believe the best work comes from companies with values, that our people are our greatest resource, and that we have a responsibility to the communities where we live and work. As a Senior Accountant reporting to the Corporate Controller, you will support corporate accounting through month-end close, financial reporting, and annual financial statement and FAR overhead audits. You will own banking activities and weekly cash flow reporting, perform accounting research and analysis, and manage the employee expense report process, including training reviewers and overseeing accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with company policies. You will also provide coverage for the Corporate Controller’s monthly close responsibilities when they are unavailable. This role requires strong accounting judgment, exceptional attention to detail, and a practical approach to improving processes.

What are the core responsibilities for the role?

  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and resolution of accounting issues

  • Support annual financial statement and FAR overhead audits by preparing organized documentation, researching issues, and responding to auditor requests in coordination with the Corporate Controller

  • Manage banking activities, monitor cash activity, prepare weekly cash flow reports and bank reconciliations, and resolve discrepancies while following established approvals and internal controls

  • Perform ad hoc reporting, accounting research, and financial analysis; verify source data and communicate findings and recommendations clearly

  • Identify and implement process improvements that reduce manual work, strengthen controls, improve accuracy, and help the team meet deadlines

  • Own the employee expense report process, including training others to perform reviews and overseeing the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and policy compliance of the end result

  • Help employees and reviewers resolve expense questions, clarify documentation requirements, and address recurring issues

  • Maintain clear procedures and supporting records for accounting processes, audits, and internal reviews

  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, proactive follow-up, and ownership of assignments through completion

  • Manage competing priorities and close deadlines while maintaining accuracy

  • Communicate clearly and work effectively with employees, accounting colleagues, and auditors

  • Work independently with sound judgment and recognize when an issue needs to be escalated

  • Other accounting-related duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA certification is not required but preferred

  • Approximately seven years of progressive accounting experience, including required experience in the architecture and engineering industry

  • Hands-on experience with Deltek Vantagepoint or Deltek Vision required

  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and experience with monthly close, journal entries, and account reconciliations

  • Experience supporting annual audits, preparing audit documentation, and responding to auditor questions

  • Working knowledge of FAR and basic cost allowability principles relevant to architecture and engineering firms and overhead audits

  • High proficiency in Excel and the ability to work accurately and efficiently with complex reports and large datasets

  • Regular, practical use of AI tools such as ChatGPT to analyze information and improve processes, with sound judgment in validating results

  • Demonstrated success implementing accounting process improvements

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills; reliable follow-through and discretion with sensitive information
