Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Cardiovascular Holding Room Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures. The RN is responsible for pre-procedural assessment, patient education, preparation, post-procedural recovery, monitoring, and discharge coordination. Working collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and the multidisciplinary cardiovascular team, the nurse ensures safe, efficient, and patient-centered care throughout the procedural continuum.
- Prepare patients for cardiovascular and interventional radiology procedures, including initiation of IV access and administration of medications as ordered.
- Provide patient and family education regarding procedural expectations, risks, recovery, and discharge instructions.
- Monitor patients before and after diagnostic and interventional procedures, identifying and responding promptly to changes in clinical condition. Assess and manages vascular access sites, including femoral, radial, and venous access.
- Recognize and initiate appropriate interventions for cardiac arrhythmias, hemodynamic instability, bleeding, or other procedural complications. Respond effectively to emergency situations, including activation of emergency response protocols.
- Coordinate patient flow between holding, procedure rooms, and recovery areas to optimize operational efficiency.
- Document patient care accurately and timely within the electronic medical record.
- Collaborate with physicians, Cath Lab staff, anesthesia providers, and ancillary departments to ensure continuity of care.
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, and departmental performance goals.
The Clinical Nurse II – MedSurg role provides direct patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act to assigned patients on Medical/Surgical units. The nurse collaborates with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely and appropriate quality patient care. This includes providing physical assessments, nursing interventions, pain management, medication administrations, specimen collection, meeting nutritional needs, and teaching and discharge needs of the patients assigned. Utilizes the nursing process based on evidence-based best practices to meet patient care needs. Evaluates and adjusts the nursing care process as necessary with consultation as needed, and confers with the appropriate resource personnel when making ethical/legal/medical dilemma decisions. Performs other duties as assigned.
Additionally, the Clinical Nurse II meets the requirements outlined in the Clinical Ladder program respective to his/her department. The Clinical Nurse II demonstrates a commitment to hospital involvement and professional growth by participating in committees, attending related meetings, and presenting education projects and/or supplemental activities.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Clinical Nurse II’s at Magnet designated facilities only require a BSN or that a BSN program is started within one year of hire date and BSN degree is attained within two years of starting the BSN program.
- BSN preferred.
- One year experience in an acute care hospital required.
- Additional requirements for specific departments are as follows:
- Cardiac Telemetry: ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.
- Heart Valve Clinic and CVOR: BLS and ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.
- Telemetry: ACLS required.
- Irvine Telemetry: ACLS; NIHSS certification required within 365 days of hire as designated by Manager
- Pacemaker & Arrhythmia Ctr: ACLS upon hire
License Required
- Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.
Certifications Required
- BLS certification prior to clinical rotation.
- Department specific certification requirements are as follows:
- Cardiac Telemetry: ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.
- Heart Valve Clinic and CVOR: BLS and ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.
- Telemetry: ACLS required.
- Irvine Telemetry: ACLS; NIHSS certification required within 365 days of hire as designated by Manager
- Pacemaker & Arrhythmia Ctr: ACLS upon hire
Certifications Preferred
- Cardiac Telemetry: PCCN.
- Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI): PCCN.
