Responsibilities
Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals, grant commitments, i.e., assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc. Monitors results, reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications. Collects, enters, and summarizes data. Assists in the maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. Performs basic statistical data analysis; prepares tables/charts/graphs and assists in organizing data. Presents at research laboratory meetings and contributes to writing of manuscripts. Works under supervision and may perform some assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator.
Additional duties:
Under the direction of the lab manager, the Research Technologist will provide specialized histology and tissue-processing support for studies involving human brain tissue and neurodegenerative disorders. Unique responsibilities include celloidin embedding and sectioning; free-floating tissue staining; immunohistochemistry, multiplex staining, immunofluorescence, H&E, Nissl, and other specialized stains; operation of the VENTANA DISCOVERY ULTRA and automated slide-scanning platforms; coordination of tissue-processing requests with the Brain Bank; and support for RNAscope and DNA/RNA extraction workflows.
Preferred experience includes working with human brain tissue, neuroanatomy, neuropathology terminology, or Brain Bank/biorepository operations. Experience with specialized histology techniques, automated staining platforms, tissue sectioning and trimming, slide preparation, and tissue or slide inventory management is also desirable.
Qualifications
Requires bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, other relevant science, or an associates degree with 6 years of relevant laboratory experience. BS/BA in biological sciences, biomedical sciences, neuroscience, laboratory sciences, histotechnology, biomedical research preferred. Must exhibit a solid understanding of lab techniques, equipment, and safety. Must have the ability to organize and carry out laboratory techniques independently and in a team setting. Experience with basic data analysis is required, as well as demonstrated writing skills.
Additional Qualifications Required:
• Experience working in a research, clinical, pathology, histology, biorepository, or wet-lab environment.
• Ability to precisely and carefully follow SOPs, written protocols, safety requirements, and set quality guidelines under the direction of the lab manager.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for specimen handling, labeling, staining, inventory, and laboratory documentation.
• Ability to work safely with human tissue specimens, laboratory reagents, and shared research equipment following appropriate training.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative research team.
Qualifications Preferred:
• Experience with free-floating tissue staining, immunohistochemistry, multiplex staining, special stains, or related histology techniques.
• Experience with the VENTANA DISCOVERY ULTRA or a similar automated staining platform.
• Experience with RNAscope, or willingness to learn and perform RNAscope workflows.
• Experience with or willingness to learn DNA and RNA extraction techniques.
• Familiarity with human brain tissue, neuroanatomy, neuropathology terminology, or Brain Bank/biorepository operations.
• Experience with tissue sectioning, trimming, slide mounting, coverslipping, labeling, and maintenance of tissue or slide inventories.
