About the job

Job Description

🧠 Medical Assistant - Behavioral Health (Plaza)

Make a Difference in Behavioral Health Care

Saint Luke's is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Medical Assistant to join our Behavioral Health team at the Plaza. This unique role offers the opportunity to support patients and providers through care coordination, communication, and medication management in a fast-paced outpatient behavioral health environment.

If you enjoy organization, patient advocacy, and working behind the scenes to improve patient care, this may be the perfect fit for you.

🏥 About the Behavioral Health Clinic

This Medical Assistant role functions differently than a traditional hands-on clinic MA position.

Approximately 85% of patient visits are conducted virtually, and the majority of daily work is focused on care coordination, patient communication, and medication workflow rather than direct patient care or clinical procedures.

In this role, you'll support psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners while helping patients navigate their mental health care journey.

💻 What You'll Do

Medical Assistants in Behavioral Health spend most of their time:

✅ Managing a high volume of MyChart messages, phone calls, and faxes

✅ Processing medication refill requests and patient advice requests through Epic

✅ Preparing and submitting prior authorizations for psychiatric medications and procedures, including ECT

✅ Assisting with FMLA, disability, school, and work-related documentation

✅ Drafting and sending patient letters and forms

✅ Coordinating communication between patients, providers, pharmacies, and insurance companies

✅ Supporting providers by keeping clinical workflows organized and moving efficiently

⚕️ Clinical Environment

While this position is based in the clinic, direct patient contact is limited.

When patients are seen in person, Medical Assistants typically:

  • Obtain vital signs
  • Update patient information
  • Support basic clinic workflows

This clinic does not routinely perform:

❌ Injections

❌ Lab draws

❌ Procedural assisting

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy administrative and coordination-focused responsibilities over hands-on clinical procedures.

🌟 Who Is Most Successful in This Role?

This position is best suited for Medical Assistants who enjoy:

  • Care coordination
  • Patient communication
  • Working within Epic and electronic health records
  • Detailed documentation
  • Organization and multitasking
  • Supporting behavioral health patients

Experience with or an interest in mental health is highly beneficial.

Candidates seeking a procedure-heavy Medical Assistant position may not find this role to be the best fit.
