About the job

The Product Realization Lab (PRL) is looking for a seasoned CNC prototype machinist to join our team. We're all about turning digital designs into real-world objects that can change the world. With decades of hands-on experience and hundreds of thousands of prototypes under our belt, we've honed a wide range of skills that cover almost every aspect of our work. We're experts at crafting high-quality models, prototypes, and manufacturing/design solutions that ultimately lead to amazing products and customer experiences. PRL is all about building a community and making a positive impact through innovative solutions, top-notch service, unmatched quality, and a commitment to sustainability.

At the heart of our approach is the perfect mix of cutting-edge technology, integrity, and dedication, which drives our passion for delivering exceptional customer satisfaction. We're not just about meeting expectations; we strive to exceed them through our advanced CNC capabilities and unwavering commitment to quality. If this sounds like a challenging yet rewarding work environment, apply today!

The Senior CNC prototype machinist role involves preparing materials, programming tool paths, setting up and operating multi-axis mill-turn CNC machines, and conducting spot checks on finished components, while also leading process development on the most technically demanding parts and mentoring other machinists. All of these tasks must be performed while maintaining strict quality and safety standards. You will work independently and lead collaborative efforts across the team, exercising significant judgment and initiative on each project. Strong communication with internal customers and engineering partners is essential — you'll provide clear updates on project status, timelines, and any technical considerations that may affect deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare material for machining using manual and CNC machines
  • Program complex 3D parts in a CAD/CAM environment, including general geometries and free-form shapes
  • Assemble fixtures, tool holders, and cutting tools to facilitate machining operations
  • Hold close tolerances and validate critical features using hand metrology equipment
  • Work independently on assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative, exercising significant independent judgment on method and process selection with minimal oversight
  • Lead and mentor other machinists on advanced CAD/CAM programming and complex part strategies, serving as a technical resource for the team
  • Own process development for technically demanding parts — fixture design, toolpath strategy, multi-axis mill-turn setup, and close-tolerance validation
  • Collaborate closely with team members and engineering to ensure the highest quality product, including design-for-manufacturability input on part drawings
  • Effectively communicate project status on a regular basis
  • Quickly adapt to new processes with minimal information or support
  • Drive continuous improvement in machining processes, cycle times, and quality
  • Accurately follow operational and routine maintenance instructions
  • Maintain a safe and clean workspace

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience setting up, operating, and programming CNC machines
  • Experience programming in a 3D CAD/CAM environment (Esprit preferred)
  • Experience holding close tolerances and validating dimensions using hand metrology (calipers, micrometers, surface plate inspection)
  • Ability to program complex 3D parts including general geometries and free-form shapes
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor or informally lead other machinists
  • Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and interpersonal skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent applicable experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multi-axis mill-turn operation and programming experience
  • Knowledge of machine code (G-code/M-code)
  • Experience working with a wide range of materials
  • Experience using horizontal and vertical saws, manual mills, and lathes
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply detailed part drawing requirements
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Track record driving process or quality improvement initiatives
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
