About the job
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Tube Laser Operator to set up, program, and operate CNC fiber tube laser cutting systems for industrial metal fabrication. The ideal candidate possesses a strong command of profile nesting, material handling for structural tubes, pipes, and channels, and precision cutting standards to maximize throughput while minimizing scrap. This role requires adherence to strict safety protocols, quality specifications, and production schedules in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Physical Requirements
Stand or Sit(Stationary position), Walk(Move, Traverse), Use hand/fingers to handle or feel (Operate, Activate, Use, Prepare, Inspect, Place, Detect, Position), Climb (stairs/ladders) or balance (Ascend/Descend, Work atop, Traverse), Stoop, kneel, crouch, or Crawl(Position self(to), Move), Talk/hear(Communicate, Detect, Converse with, Discern, Convey, Express oneself, Exchange information), See (Detect, Determine, Perceive, Identify, Recognize, Judge, Observe, Inspect, Estimate, Assess), Pushing or Pulling, Reaching, Repetitive Motion Function in the Job
Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Job Function
Key Job Functions & Responsibilities
-
Machine Setup & Operation
-
Configure, operate, and monitor CNC fiber tube laser cutting machines to process structural steel tubing, pipe, channel, and custom profiles according to engineering drawings and production schedules.
-
Set up and adjust focus positions, assist gas pressures (oxygen, nitrogen, air), cutting speeds, and power parameters based on profile type, wall thickness, and material grade.
-
Perform routine pre-operation inspections, lens cleaning, nozzle checks, and preventative maintenance on optical assemblies, chucks, and loading systems.
-
Nesting Optimization & Material Efficiency
-
Utilize specialized tube nesting and CAD/CAM software to optimize part layouts along lengths of tubing, maximizing material yield and minimizing offcut scrap.
-
Review shop floor drawings, bill of materials (BOM), and cut lists prior to execution to verify dimensional accuracy, profile types, and material certifications.
-
Quality Control & Inspection
-
Measure finished cut tubes and profiles using precision measuring tools (calipers, tape measures, angle gauges) to verify conformance to strict dimensional and angular tolerances.
-
Inspect cut edges, laser kerfs, and complex copes/miters for dross, slag, and surface defects, making real-time machine adjustments as needed.
-
Clearly label, sort, and stage finished tube bundles and skeleton offcuts for secondary processing, welding, or shipping.
-
Safety & Housekeeping
-
Adhere strictly to all OSHA standards, plant safety guidelines, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, including laser-safe eye protection, ear protection, and steel-toed boots.
-
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area around the tube laser loading bays, automated bundle loaders, and scrap collection bins.
