Details
The John and Marcia Price College of Engineering at the University of Utah is hiring a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CVEEN), focused on Nuclear Engineering. The position is open at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Lecturer) level and will begin in August 2027.
We are looking for an outstanding educator specializing in nuclear engineering to advance our Nuclear Engineering Program (UNEP) and support our teaching mission. The main responsibility will be teaching a variety of nuclear engineering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including topics such as nuclear fundamentals, reactor theory, radiation detection, fuel cycles, and thermal-hydraulics. While the primary focus is on nuclear engineering, candidates who are also able to teach core Civil and Environmental Engineering courses—such as statics, hydraulics, and strength of materials—will be viewed favorably, but this is not a requirement for the position.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering or a closely related field by the start date. Strong communication skills, a passion for teaching, and a commitment to student success are required. Key responsibilities include: teaching nuclear engineering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels; (optionally) teaching core Civil and Environmental Engineering courses; helping update and improve the nuclear engineering curriculum; advising and mentoring students; and participating in departmental, college, and university service, including outreach and workforce development to grow Nuclear Engineering at the University of Utah.
You’ll join a forward-thinking department with 22 tenure-track faculty, five dedicated lecturers, and a collaborative teaching and research culture. The Nuclear Engineering Program (UNEP) offers minors, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and features a 100 kW NRC-licensed TRIGA reactor along with state-of-the-art training facilities. Faculty enjoy extensive campus and industry partnerships, including access to advanced resources like the Nanofab materials characterization center. For more about CVEEN, visit www.civil.utah.edu.
The University of Utah, a nationally recognized R1 institution in the Big 12 Conference, is located in Salt Lake City—regularly ranked among America’s best places to live (US News & World Report, 2026). The University is the #1 Public University in the West (Wall Street Journal, 2024). Salt Lake City offers exceptional outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities, and a thriving entrepreneurial scene.
Application Process: Please submit your cover letter (detailing your interest and relevant qualifications), curriculum vitae, teaching statement, up to three relevant publications or instructional materials(all as PDFs), and names/contact information for three references. For full consideration, apply by November 2, 2026; applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
