Faculty Development Instructional Designer - School of Medicine
The Faculty Development Specialist supports the BYU School of Medicine by designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating faculty development resources that help medical faculty be successful in their roles at the School of Medicine. This includes initiatives that prepare faculty members to excel as educators, scholars, mentors, and academic citizens. The position partners with faculty, course and clerkship leaders, and medical education administrators to build scalable, evidence-informed professional development programs, focusing on the three pillars of faculty development: teaching, service (citizenship), and scholarship. This position also contributes to a spiritually grounded and scientifically rigorous medical education by supporting faculty development that enables all faculty at the School of Medicine to develop physicians who will minister to God’s children throughout the world as healers, teachers, researchers, leaders, and disciples of Jesus Christ.
This position is critical to the success of the BYU School of Medicine, a newly established organization within the university. As the school continues to launch and grow, a successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to take on evolving responsibilities and assignments to support its effective implementation and ongoing operations.
What you'll do in this position:
Faculty development program design and delivery
- Design and facilitate faculty development workshops, asynchronous modules, teaching guides, onboarding materials, and communities of practice.
- Support faculty in evidence-informed teaching methods, including active learning, case-based learning, team-based learning, small-group facilitation, clinical teaching, inclusive teaching, feedback, and learner coaching.
- Translate educational theory and medical education best practices into practical tools that busy faculty can use in classroom, simulation, laboratory, and clinical settings.
Educational technology and digital learning development
- Build and maintain faculty development courses, resource sites, templates, checklists, and learning objects in the learning management system and related platforms.
- Use authoring, video, polling, screen-capture, captioning, accessibility, and interactive-learning tools to create effective digital resources.
- Advise faculty on appropriate, ethical, and effective use of learning technologies, including emerging AI tools, while maintaining accuracy, accessibility, and alignment with school policy.
Assessment, evaluation, and data-informed improvement
- Build and maintain faculty development courses to educate faculty regarding effective assessment, feedback, learner evaluation, and competency-based education practices.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of faculty development initiatives through participation, outcomes, and program assessment data.
- Prepare reports and recommendations that inform continuous improvement of faculty development programs.
Accreditation, documentation, and continuous quality improvement support
- Assist with faculty development documentation, resource organization, and evidence gathering related to accreditation, program evaluation, and continuous improvement.
- Maintain organized records of faculty development offerings, attendance, materials, outcomes, and follow-up actions.
- Help ensure faculty development resources are accessible, current, and aligned with competency-based medical education expectations.
- Other assignments and initiatives as assigned to support the School of Medicine.
Project coordination, collaboration, and resource development
- Coordinate timelines, deliverables, communications, and resource development across faculty development projects.
- Collaborate with medical education, assessment, curriculum, simulation, information technology, library, student affairs, and department stakeholders.
- Develop reusable templates, job aids, consultation protocols, workshop outlines, and implementation guides that support a start-up medical school environment.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, adult learning, higher education, health professions education, medical education, or a closely related field.
- Three or more years of instructional design, faculty development, educational technology, curriculum design, or teaching-and-learning support experience in higher education, health professions education, or a comparable professional learning environment.
- Demonstrated experience consulting with subject matter experts to design aligned learning objectives, learning activities, assessments, and evaluation plans.
- Experience developing faculty or professional learning resources, workshops, online modules, templates, or job aids.
- Strong knowledge of adult learning theory, backward design, universal design for learning, accessibility, inclusive teaching, active learning, blended/online learning, and program evaluation.
- Ability to coach and consult respectfully with physicians, scientists, clinicians, administrators, and other faculty who may have varied teaching experience.
- Skill in writing measurable learning objectives and aligning objectives, content, activities, assessments, and outcomes.
- Working proficiency with learning management systems, web conferencing, lecture capture/video tools, polling or audience-response tools, screen capture, captioning workflows, and common productivity platforms.
- Ability to develop faculty workshops, asynchronous modules, slide decks, facilitation guides, rubrics, checklists, templates, and concise teaching resources.
- Basic ability to collect, summarize, and interpret evaluation data and prepare clear reports or recommendations.
- Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, project-management, organization, and relationship-building skills
- Commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, accessibility, ethical technology use, and the mission and standards of Brigham Young University.
Preferred
- Master's degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, adult learning, higher education, health professions education, medical education, or a closely related field.
- Advanced graduate certificate in medical education, health professions education, instructional design, educational leadership, curriculum studies, or educational technology.
- Experience in undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, nursing, PA, pharmacy, public health, interprofessional education, or another health professions education setting.
- Experience supporting a new academic program, new curriculum, faculty academy, accreditation preparation, curriculum mapping, or continuous quality improvement process.
- Familiarity with competency-based medical education, entrustable professional activities, clinical reasoning instruction, simulation, OSCEs, workplace-based assessment, and remediation/learner support design.
- Certification or formal training related to Quality Matters, online course design, accessibility, assessment, program evaluation, simulation education, or faculty development.
- Familiarity with learning management systems
- Proficiency with Articulate Storyline/Rise, H5P, Camtasia, Panopto, Adobe Captivate, or comparable digital learning authoring and media tools.
- Familiarity with curriculum mapping, exam management, evaluation, OSCE/clinical skills, competency tracking, and learning analytics systems.
- Knowledge of LCME-related documentation, AAMC resources, health systems science, interprofessional education, and medical education accreditation expectations.
- Experience helping faculty use AI responsibly to draft cases, objectives, rubrics, quiz questions, simulations, and feedback prompts, with appropriate review for accuracy, bias, copyright, accessibility, and policy alignment.
- Ability to build scalable systems in a start-up environment, including resource libraries, consultation workflows, onboarding pathways, calendars, and evaluation plans.

Pay Grade: 53
Typical Starting Pay: $75,000-$97,000
The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
