Main responsibilities:

The Transportation Superintendent provides leadership and oversight for the day-to-day transportation operation at the Portland Distribution Center. This position is responsible for delivering safe, compliant, cost-effective, and reliable transportation services to retail locations while optimizing labor, equipment, routing, fleet utilization, and operating expenses.

The Superintendent directly leads the Senior Supervisors and Transportation Supervisors, provides indirect leadership to the driver workforce, and partners closely with Distribution Center Operations, Vehicle Maintenance, and retail partners. Success in the role is measured by consistent on-time delivery, regulatory compliance, department financial performance, continuous improvement, and employee development.

  • Adjust staffing and equipment plans in response to daily operating conditions, store requirements, volume changes, and equipment availability.

  • Ensure the timely return of salvage, pallets, totes, and other company assets from retail locations.

  • Oversee outside-carrier activity to ensure carrier loads meet delivery schedules and store-service standards.

  • Develop and coordinate backhaul opportunities that reduce empty miles, improve asset utilization, and offset transportation expenses.

  • Retail Service and Partnerships

  • Provide consistent, dependable, and professional transportation service to Portland Division retail locations.

  • Establish effective working relationships with store leadership, retail partners, Distribution Center teams, and other internal customers.

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for store delivery concerns, including late loads, damaged product, shortages, poor load conditions, delivery-window issues, and service complaints, and resolve them with store leadership.

  • Communicate transportation disruptions promptly and provide appropriate recovery plans and follow-up.

  • Use store feedback, delivery results, and operating trends to identify opportunities for service improvement.

  • People Leadership

  • Directly lead Senior Supervisors and Transportation Supervisors and provide indirect leadership to the driver workforce.

  • Establish clear expectations and hold the team accountable for safety, service, productivity, attendance, compliance, and professional conduct.

  • Direct the workforce based on daily operational needs and changing business priorities.

  • Coach, train, mentor, and develop supervisors and drivers to build leadership capability and improve operating performance.

  • Administer company policies and collective bargaining agreement provisions, where applicable, consistently and appropriately.

  • Address employee-relations matters, including performance feedback, evaluations, policy compliance, recognition, corrective action, and discipline.

  • Promote teamwork, inclusion, open communication, accountability, and respectful workplace practices.

  • Partner with Human Resources and Labor Relations on employee matters as needed.

  • Safety and Regulatory Compliance

  • Provide a safe working environment for employees and ensure compliance with company safety requirements.

  • Serve as the department's point of contact for Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and other regulations applicable to transportation operations and communicate regulatory changes to supervisors and drivers.

  • Ensure drivers, equipment, records, and operating practices remain compliant with DOT and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor driver hours of service (HOS) and audit electronic logs and support documentation for accuracy and compliance.

  • Support road testing, training, qualification, and performance monitoring.

  • Investigate vehicle accidents involving drivers and third parties.

  • Identify operational or safety concerns and ensure appropriate training or corrective action.

  • Reinforce safe driving expectations and effective collision and risk-reduction practices.

  • Fleet and Vehicle Maintenance Coordination

  • Partner with Vehicle Maintenance leadership to maximize tractor and trailer availability.

  • Monitor out-of-service equipment and establish priorities based on operational and service needs.

  • Coordinate follow-up on driver repair requests and equipment concerns.

  • Review equipment requirements and provide recommendations regarding significant equipment needs or purchases.

  • Ensure transportation equipment is utilized efficiently to support business needs.

  • Financial and Performance Management

  • Support the financial performance of the Transportation Department, including employee, equipment, and facility costs.

  • Assist in developing and administering department budgets and operating goals.

  • Monitor transportation performance using safety, service, productivity, labor, equipment, and cost measures, such as on-time delivery, preventable accident frequency, cost per mile, fuel economy, and equipment availability.

  • Maintain accurate records related to tonnage, mileage, fuel consumption, repair costs, and other transportation activity.

  • Review applicable outside-carrier expenses and invoices.

  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities while maintaining appropriate safety and store-service standards.
