The Construction Pipelayer is responsible for installing underground utility systems including storm sewer, sanitary sewer, waterline, and drainage structures on heavy highway, municipal, and site development projects. This position works closely with foremen, equipment operators, and laborers to safely install pipe according to project plans, grades, and specifications while maintaining productivity and quality standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install underground pipe systems including reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), HDPE, PVC, ductile iron, and storm drainage structures.

  • Read and interpret construction plans, grade stakes, blueprints, and cut sheets.

  • Prepare trenches and pipe bedding materials for proper installation.

  • Guide equipment operators during excavation, pipe placement, and backfilling operations.

  • Set and align pipe to proper line and grade using lasers, levels, and grade rods.

  • Install manholes, inlets, catch basins, valves, and related utility structures.

  • Compact backfill materials according to project specifications.

  • Perform utility tie-ins and assist with testing of completed systems.

  • Ensure trenches are maintained in a safe condition and follow all trench safety requirements.

  • Identify and report underground utility conflicts or field issues to supervisors.

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean work area.

  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific requirements.

  • Work effectively as part of a construction crew to meet production goals and deadlines.

Qualifications

Required

  • 1+ years of experience in underground utility or pipeline construction preferred.

  • Knowledge of pipe-laying methods and underground utility installation.

  • Ability to work in trenches and around heavy equipment.

  • Ability to read measuring devices, grades, and construction stakes.

  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Reliable transportation to and from project sites.

  • Commitment to safety and quality workmanship.

Preferred

  • Experience installing storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and waterline systems.

  • Experience with laser levels and grade checking.

  • OSHA 10 certification.

  • CDL or ability to obtain one.

  • Knowledge of utility construction specifications and municipal standards.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and lift throughout the workday.

  • Work in trenches, uneven terrain, and active construction zones.

  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods.

  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel to job sites as required.
